This is a voluntary website mainly created by Mike Thompson, former President of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain & Ireland and Lynn Faulds Wood, award winning former BBC Watchdog Presenter and bowel cancer survivor.
Past President of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain & Ireland - is a consultant surgeon in Colorectal Surgery at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust and has chaired many leading committees (the National Bowel Cancer Audit Project (www.acpgbi.org.uk): the Dept of Health GP Referral Guidelines etc) With his colleagues in Portsmouth, Mike has developed the Portsmouth Hospitals Symptoms Database, now covering 31,000 people with bowel problems coming into to hospital Outpatient departments over the last 27 years and almost 2,000 bowel cancers. It is now recognised as probably the best symptoms database in the world.
Lynn Faulds Wood presented the BBC’s Watchdog programme for nearly 10 years with her husband John Stapleton. She was diagnosed with advanced bowel cancer after a year of medical delay and switched to making medical programmes including ITV World In Action – Doctor Knows Best on GP training in cancer diagnosis (10.2 million viewers) and Bobby Moore & Me - an investigation into bowel cancer (6.5 million). Since then Lynn has helped Mike Thompson and colleagues to produce the world’s first evidence-based symptoms guidance for bowel cancer, helped to set up formal training centres for doctors and nurses in endoscopy, founded and ran European Cancer Patient Coalition for eight years.
